Agricultural Tile Drainage Runoff Treatment – Ohio

Following successful phosphorus and suspended solids reduction from the agricultural tile drain in Charlotte, Vermont (2010-2011), two Phosphoreduc systems have been implemented in a treatment train after nitrate bioreactor  to reduce phosphorus reduction from agricultural tiles runoff in Ohio (Ohio State University Farm, Columbus  and St. Charles Seminary in Grand Lake St. Marys Mercer county (GLSM). The GLSM is Ohio’s largest inland lake occupying 21 square miles (nearly 13,000 surface acres) in Mercer and Auglaize counties in west-central Ohio. The lake is highly nutrient enriched (hyper-eutrophic) as a result of agricultural nutrient-rich runoff, failing home sewage systems, internal nutrient loading, and other nonpoint sources of nutrient pollution (http://water.epa.gov/polwaste/upload/lakeline_article.pdf).
